Workers Are More Likely to Resent Feedback If Its Coming From a Woman, Study Shows

Laborers Are More Likely to Resent Feedback If It's Coming From a Woman, Study Shows Exploration as of now discloses to us that exhibition surveys will in general have a sex inclination. For instance, we realize that ladies get substantially less-accommodating input than men in their exhibition surveys its regularly on the obscure side and will in general spotlight more on their character properties than on their genuine abilities and work encounters. However, new exploration likewise discloses to us that theres predisposition even on the beneficiary of criticism. That is correct specialists hate input from ladies more than they do men.Perhaps this is on the grounds that ladies are required to be philanthropic supporters office moms who lift each other up and are detached observers to working environment concerns in light of the fact that, all things considered, they should attempt to keep the harmony. Isn't that so? All things considered, for reasons unknown, when ladies do offer significant productive critcism something they so frantically need in their own exhibit ion audits laborers dont recieve it so well.According to an ongoing report distributed in the Institute of Labor Economics, from Martin Abel, an associate teacher of financial aspects at Middlebury College, regardless of whether ladies and men offer a similar criticism, it very well may be taken in an unexpected way. Abel asked 2,700 individuals on Mechanical Turk, Amazons online gig stage, to do translations for a pseudo firm. Every one of them was allocated a phony supervisor with either a female or male name (the names were purposely picked to take race, age, training and different elements into account). Then 60% of the laborers got either positive or negative input from a female or male manager that read:Hello, This is NAME. As referenced in the assignment presentation, Im administering your exhibition in translating the receipts. I just turned out a portion of the receipts. Your presentation has been above/beneath normal. I was satisfied with/baffled by your exertion and scrupu lousness. Going ahead, recollect that your proceeded with duty will improve/absence of responsibility will hurt the nature of our administrations. NAMEUpon fulfillment, they were gotten some information about their activity fulfillment and their enthusiasm for working for the firm. What's more, what Abel found is disconcerting. Both ladies and men were all the more contrarily influenced by analysis from female directors to such an extent that a greater part of them were not keen on working in the firm later on, prompting a 70% bigger decrease in work fulfillment than critism from male administrators. In addition, men would in general excuse the legitimacy of female chiefs analysis, however womens sentiments didnt change contingent upon gender. So for what reason is womens criticism so sick recieved? Abel recommends that the laborers were around multiple times bound to relate giving commendation and fitting utilization of tone with female directors. Paradoxically, they are about twice bound to relate giving analysis and exacting desires with male administrators. What's more, a wide assortment of examination reveals to us over and over that, when ladies go astray from assumptions of sexual orientation standards, they make individuals awkward and are, along these lines, considered less likable...Gender inclinations and unpretentious sexism plagues work environments, and until more ladies are in regarded leadeship positions in which their agreeability doesnt matter (and isnt even addressed), we despite everything have an issue.- - AnnaMarie Houlis is a women's activist, an independent writer and an undertaking fan with a fondness for rash performance travel. Live On The Other Side Of Yes

Live on the Other Side of Yes This post is impressed by this John Maxwell post. If you’re aspiring to be an excellent chief, you could be feeling somewhat whiplash. A few years in the past, Sheryl Sandburg urged you to lean in. But a herd of management gurus are telling you that the only way to obtain your objectives is by saying no. No. No. No. Establish boundaries and guard them fiercely. I get it. I even subscribe to the Corollary to No: If it’s not “hell sure”, it ought to be “no.” Saying yes to projects you don’t actually care about means your life will get stuffed up with busyness that seems like drudgery. But what about the initiatives that DO sound thrilling? What about those occasions your instinct nudges you, whispering “this could be huge?” All the emphasis on the facility of no makes me feel dangerous for people who view new opportunities with skepticism, even concern. They don’t say no from a place of empowerment; they are saying no because it’s eas y. It turns into simpler and simpler till you stop listening to the voice inside you that might be really excited a few new project. Comedian John Mulaney says “It’s a lot simpler not to do things than to do them. Percentage â€"clever, it’s one hundred percent easier not to do things than to do them. It’s amazing that anybody ever does anything.” I’ve seen plenty of people who are afraid to say sure. They guard their schedules like a mom duck guarding her fragile newly-laid eggs. “I simply don’t have time for more meetings.” “I actually have a brand new project that can take up the subsequent few months.” “I have to handle my commitments to stay sane.” All cheap solutions, and good follow for sustaining balance in your life. Also for sustaining the established order. New ideas, new projects, and new opportunities are sparks struck from somebody’s creativeness (or somebody’s downside that needs solving.) Like actual sparks, they die out rapidly except so mebody takes a moment to breathe onto them, giving them the air they should catch fire. Jon Maxwell describes a meeting the place someone (surely a very busy government) dared to say sure. “Not too way back I forged imaginative and prescient to a gaggle of leaders. There had been several individuals within the room listening as I talked in regards to the prospects of partnership, and the way becoming a member of together may make a major distinction on the planet. After talking to the group at giant, I met with a handful of those leaders in non-public. We have been in the green room, and the dialog turned to the possibilities of partnership and pushing slightly deeper on the details. I’ll never forget how, because the power in the room began to construct, one of many leaders stood up and stated, “John, the reply is sure. Count me in. Whatever this implies, I am ayes.” With that one declaration, the room exploded, and everybody jumped onboard with the vision. After things die d down, I pulled that leader apart for a chat. After thanking him for his positive dedication, I needed to ask: “What made you reply so boldly?” He answered: “I live on the opposite facet of sure. That’s where I find abundance and alternative.” When was the final time you stood up in a gathering (or anywhere) and mentioned boldly, “I’m in”? Nothing modifications until someone starts one thing new. It’s uncomfortable to say yes â€" especially should you’re the first to speak. It’s much more comfortable to say no. No seldom does hurt. No retains issues manageable. No doesn’t make waves. But waves are what carries you forward. Have you ever wished your profession, your life, have been more fascinating? Do you would like you’d done more, made extra, lived extra? John Maxwell writes: “A life of creativity may be yours, but provided that you progress previous concern and learn to grab the opportunities in front of you. Slipping free from our comfortablenoand dw elling on the other aspect ofyesis the easiest way to make the mandatory shift to abundance.” Published by candacemoody Candace’s background consists of Human Resources, recruiting, training and assessment. Are You Going Too Wide In Your Career

Are You Going Too Wide In Your Career? It’s the query we’re confronted with most by our clients when we share our most counter-intuitive advice: don’t concentrate on broadcasting that you’re looking out. Why? Because the real query you have to answer is… “How will they know I’m EXCEPTIONALLY good at what I do?” Let’s face it â€" THAT’S why you get employed. No one cares that you’re wanting. In truth, if something, it undermines your positioning, how much people need you and…most of all…what people might be keen to pay you. So, as you concentrate on pivoting or upgrading from your current position, ask your self this… “Who on the market is aware of that I’m too good to be ignored?” TRANSCRIPT Kevin Kermes: Let’s talk in regards to the difference between going a mile broad and an inch deep, which is what most individuals do in terms of their profession and their job search, versus going a mile deep and an inch broad. Here’s what I imply by that. Let’s think about how most individuals start their searches. They say I have to submit my resume out on job boards, I have to ship it to as many people as attainable, I need to ensure that everyone knows that I’m wanting, how is anybody going to hire me if I don’t know that I’m looking and that’s asking the totally wrong query as a result of what people must be centered on and what you have to be targeted on is making sure that the proper people, that basically narrow inch wide gap, is aware of that you simply’re exceptionally good at what you do and knows what those things are that you do and the outcomes that you have delivered and may ship for them. Olivia Gamber: I know what you guys are thinking. This is the ob jection that’s already coming in my head, what do you say to those folks that maybe they haven’t carried out pretty much as good of a job networking they usually need results now as a result of they’re in the course of a search or you’re unemployed, or you’re under employed otherwise you’re not joyful and you need results? How do you start networking and get folks to know you’re looking? Kevin Kermes: It’s a natural place to be, right? It’s naturally to think that is great, this all sounds unbelievable but right here’s where I am right now and I even have an immediate want. What I’ll come back to is an article, and this goes forwards and backwards between the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times yearly where they interview search companies and the search corporations constantly say that their purchasers want people who find themselves at present working. That bias, that tendency in direction of that's as a result of people need what they can’t have and extra importantly, it’s as a result of nowhere in that message is I’m trying. There’s no worth for somebody who’s going to rent you round the truth that you’re trying. No one cares, to be perfectly blunt. What they do care about are the outcomes they should achieve. What do they need to do for their shareholders? What are the important thing issues that they’re coping with proper now which are keeping them between success? Maybe on your future boss that’s a promotion, maybe quite frankly it’s them keeping their job. If their success or failure hinges upon this crucial task, this critical set of specific tasks that have to be done by this role and why you’re the best possible particular person to do it. Incidentally, you want to position yourself for great compensation, that’s the place the dialog needs to start out out versus I’m currently trying. Olivia Gamber: Exactly. Kevin Kermes: If this has been helpful, if this has resonated with you, do us a favor like it, share it. Better yet, share it with anyone else who you suppose might get some benefit out of this content. Thanks guys. Olivia Gamber: Bye guys.

Engineering Musical Drums

Designing Musical Drums Designing Musical Drums Designing Musical Drums By Soren Maloney What are melodic steel drums? The steel drum is the main acoustic instrument created in the only remaining century. In the United States the instrument is known as the steel drum while all through the vast majority of the Caribbean, the instrument is usually alluded to as the steelpan or container. The steelpan has its underlying foundations in the drumming customs of the two biggest ethnic gatherings in Trinidad and Tobago Afro and Indo Trinidadians, and was concocted around the Second World War. Preceding the creation of the steelpan, islanders molded instruments from roll container, paint tins, oil barrels, wooden pails and bamboo shafts. The extending oil industry and the American Naval bases in Trinidad during World War II gave a bounty of oil drums which gave. Figure 1: Used 55 gallon oil drums route to another material for testing. The finish of the Second World War saw another instrument as the steelpan, and today, most of steelpans are created from utilized or virgin 55-gallon oil drums as appeared in figure 1. Each steelpan comprises of two districts: the playing surface on which the note locales are found and the side regularly alluded to as the skirt (see figure 2). In music, note alludes to the sign utilized in melodic documentation or to the pitch of a sound. The word note regarding the steelpan is additionally utilized when alluding to the physical space or the locale distributed to a melodic note on the dish surface as found in figure 2. Throughout the decades, steelpans have developed into a scope of instruments with various skillet types. The current playing scope of the group of steelpans broadens roughly five octaves on the Western melodic scale. Since innovation, steelpans keep on being dominatingly hand-made from shut top, low-carbon-steel oil drums. The general skillet making forms includes 1) dishing the drum top, 2) making the note districts on the playing surface, 3) cutting the side of the drum, 4) warming the playing surface, 5) starting tuning of the note areas, 6) covering of the container and 7) calibrating of the note locales. The initial phase in the conventional skillet utilizing a heavy hammer or an overwhelming metal ball to accomplish a dished surface that shapes the playing surface on which the note areas are made. Subsequent to dishing, the note locales are framed on the playing surface and the side of the drum is sliced to length contingent upon the skillet type underway. On account of bass skillet the whole drum side is held. Note locales are commonly orchestrated with the goal that neighboring notes share a consonant melodic relationship to such an extent that when played at the same time sounds satisfying to the human ear. Before tuning note locales, the playing surface is warmed to give a type of pressure help from the dishing and note-making activities. This warming is accepted to give some surface solidifying through the impact of strain maturing of the steel. Container tuning, the last stage, is viewed as one of the most refined strides of the whole steelpan creation process. During tuning t he skillet producer hand-tunes a few modes in each note area to frequencies on the Western twelve tone equivalent personality scale. These mode frequencies are tuned to have a consonant melodic relationship. Steelpan tuning stays an expertise that takes numerous years to ace and there are just a bunch of ace dish tuners. The steelpan is chrome covered or painted to give consumption assurance and a last calibrating is done to make up for the detuning brought about by the covering procedure. Motorized dish framing forms A few issues related with sinking by hand have lead skillet creators to scan for automated choices to dish framing. A portion of these issues run from high clamor force levels, material wastage because of parting of the drum during the sinking procedure, and issues experienced by skillet manufacturers which incorporate commotion initiated hearing misfortune and presentation to hand-arm vibrations. A portion of the motorized procedures applied to dishing by container producers incorporate, pneumatic pounding, ordinary turning and hydroforming. Pneumatic pounding has gotten famous among dish creators attributable to its moderately minimal effort and fast. It is likewise less vitality requesting when contrasted and conventional hand sinking however requires the same amount of aptitude with respect to the skillet creator to abstain from parting the drum surface. Be that as it may, this method additionally uncovered the dish developers to high clamor levels ~ 100dB and issues associated with hand arm vibrations. Traditional machine turning has likewise been effectively utilized and includes the dynamic molding of a pivoting metal clear over a turning mandrel looking like the dish to be shaped as shown in figure 3. Turning not at all like customary handcrafting and pneumatic pounding makes it conceivable to create skillet dishes with a moderately decent level of consistency since a similar mandrel is utilized over and again. The completed dish is along these lines connected to a round and hollow side. Manual turning can likewise be genuinely testing and requires aptitude as control of the procedure is exceptionally reliant on the fitness of the administrator. In any case, turning of container can exploit programmable numerical control (PNC) which utilizes playback innovation. Here, the container dish is spun physically by an accomplished administrator while his movement is recorded and played back to shape ensuing dishes. This exploits both administrator aptitude and the repeatability given by the PC. Figure 3: Spin framing of a container dish Hydroforming is another sheet metal framing process that has been applied to container dishing. The time reserve funds accomplished by this procedure is wonderful however the generally high capital expense requires the creation of an enormous volume of dish so as to recover capital and tooling costs. Hydroforming doesn't open dish producers to high commotion and vibration levels and conveys skillet with unrivaled geometrical exactness, resistance and repeatability yet has poor adaptability as committed instruments will be required for each container type. Metal combination choices to low-carbon steel Other skillet producers have explored different avenues regarding metal composites, for example, alpha-metal (70%Cu/30%Zn), 304 tempered steel and aluminum 6061 (T0 and T6 heat treatable evaluations). These metal amalgams were reasonable as a result of their high formability and uncommon erosion safe properties. The utilization of aluminum gives the chance to light-weight skillet which can be hard covered and hued through the anodizing procedure. Be that as it may, not many dish creators produce container from these materials disregarding their alluring properties. The main downside is the moderately significant expense of these materials while another disadvantage is identified with the cautious control and refined gear required to give heat treatment to these composites. For example, skillet produced using tempered steels may require irregular arrangement treatment toughening during the dishing stage because of the quick work solidifying of hardened steel. Arrangement treatment inc ludes warming the steel to somewhere in the range of 1010C and 1120C before cooling quickly. On the off chance that the treated steel isn't cooled quickly, especially somewhere in the range of 500C and 850C, there is a danger of sharpening where chromium carbides encourages from the steel in this way sabotaging its consumption assurance capacity. Vibration conduct The steelpan like most percussion instruments is a contributed percussion instrument which there are two particular highlights. Initially, the principal mode in each steelpan note is tuned to have a predominant major tone and besides, a portion of the characteristic frequencies of the higher modes are fixed on a consonant relationship with the key. Various modular testing considers have been performed on steelpans, and the one of a kind vibration conduct of steelpan notes in which vibrations are dominatingly restricted inside the limits of energized notes is very much reported (see figure 4). In any case, not at all like a few other percussion instruments, for example, the kettle drum, marimba, xylophone and Indian drums, there is no investigative or numerical model that enough portrays the vibration conduct of steelpan note districts. Indeed, even with propels in computational abilities, the demonstrating of steelpan notes stays an impressive test. The test might be to some degree because of the trouble of displaying the leftover burdens welcomed on by the warming and shaping cycles experienced by the dish surface. The steelpan is another instrument that is proceeding to develop, with open doors for additional advancement in the use of metal framing methods, materials choice and demonstrating of vibration conduct. Hand and pneumatic sinking albeit exceptionally modest opens dish creators to high clamor and vibration levels, which is an immediate danger to their wellbeing and life span as specialists. Figure 4: Vibration mode states of initial three characteristic frequencies of a steelpan note (a) first mode, (b) second mode and (c) third mode Hydroforming while generally peaceful, ability free and quick, is rigid, require critical capital expense, and enormous volumes of dishes would be required to make back the initial investment on venture. The turning innovation is additionally alluring given that it very well may be completely robotized. In spite of the fact that the poor erosion properties and substantial load of low-carbon steel are huge impediments to its utilization in dish creation, its minimal effort, inexhaustible accessibility, simplicity of framing and recyclability will keep on observing low-carbon steel as the true material for skillet making. Albeit alpha-metal, treated steel and aluminum offer appealing advantages, container creators may long stay reluctant to change as present creation and tuning procedures have developed around over seven many years of utilizing low-carbon steel. Karin Schroeck-Singh gave an impressively nitty gritty survey of every single chapter. Navigating Career Crossroads â€" 10 Things I love about this book # 1 â€" The peruser's advantages. The advantages that the peruser will pick up from perusing this book are referenced twice in Exploring vocation intersection, once toward the start and afterward again toward the end. This methodology will cause the peruser to feel that it was advantageous purchasing and perusing the book. How Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career -The Muse

How Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career - The Muse How Trusting Yourself Can Benefit Your Career Nine years back, I settled on an idiotic choice. I left an incredible activity at a phenomenal organization, Capital One. In any case, I'd been there for 10 years and gotten a handle on worn at the mature age of 35. With duties, a family at home, and a lot of investment opportunities standing by to vest, I ought to have requested a six-month vacation, yet rather I surrendered. What might I do during that time? I would make a stride once again from the monotonous routine to make sense of what I ought to do straightaway and how might I make my profession important once more. As opposed to sitting in a desk area trusting the appropriate response would come to me in the middle of noting messages and gatherings, I would escape from everything and tune in to the Universe. Turns out, it was the best choice of my profession. I know not every person has the choice to leave a compensation. Be that as it may, everybody has the choice to tune in to the Universe regardless of whether it appears to be somewhat insane at that point. This is what I realized simultaneously. Regardless of whether You Do Not Decide, You Still Have Made a Choice I gave my notification on a run of the mill dim January day. However as I left my supervisor's office, the sky looked bluer. The grass was greener. Food tasted better. Simply in the wake of breaking free did I understand how unequivocally dormancy had secured me. The thing is, scarcely any cubicle jobs are terrible and that makes it very simple to endure an occupation just in light of the fact that nothing's incorrectly. Be that as it may, as my faculties honed in my initial hardly any days off the activity, I understood nothing incorrectly ought not be mistaken for something right. Here's a litmus test: What's your standpoint heading into work every morning? Be straightforward with yourself. In the correct activity, it's reasonable for expect you'll anticipate going into work the greater part of the week, be undecided at any rate once, and somewhat fear one day. (Generally Monday.) obviously, even an occupation you love will have its awful days. However, there ought to be good overall. A bigger number of days you anticipate than days you fear. By tolerating that you're troubled at your particular employment, you're settling on a decision to feel that way. So don't-choose to be glad, choose to assume responsibility for your own vocation. Your Career Depends on You Seeing the Right Questions, Rather Than the Right Answers One month into my trial, I could detect my batteries reviving. I was lucky enough to have the option to burn through most days dealing with my family just as myself. My children got the chance to go to the recreation center every day, my better half got the chance to eat a home-prepared feast, and I got the opportunity to invest energy doing the basic things-practicing and perusing. Since my routine included time to just think, I began having thoughts once more. It was novel and extravagant. What's more, it was the normal outcome of fencing off this time and allowing myself consent to investigate my own considerations. Every so often I had splendid musings, different days not really. Freeing myself from a desk area and the everyday strain to convey released my imagination. This period in my vocation instructed me to acknowledge that it's OK to have a great deal of thoughts, even silly thoughts. While working in reverse from an unmistakable objective can be significant, I discovered that occasionally the best thoughts emerge just from going on an open-finished excursion. You don't generally need to have the technique and the appropriate responses and the arrangement. The Universe Will Speak in the event that You Commit to Listening Alright, I comprehend what you're thinking-and truly, I pretty much came up short on cash. Having the opportunity to believe is superb, however it doesn't take care of the tabs. Let me tell the truth. I'm not pleased. Despite the fact that I felt that my profession objective was to be a piece of the startup network, I considered I may need to come back to Corporate America, and I met at a Fortune 500 organization. A little voice in my mind stated, Father was correct; you ought to have done the brilliant thing and simply taken a holiday. What's this jabber about tuning in to the Universe? Be that as it may, similarly as my tension was topping, the Universe addressed me. Furthermore, it came as an email from a previous Capital One senior official. He heard I may be available and he coincidentally knew an incredible chance. Things being what they are, he was dependent upon a non-request and was denied from reaching current representatives about openings for work. On the off chance that I had taken a vacation the shrewd methodology- I would have been a worker and still beyond reach. At long last, I got official word from the Universe that I'd settled on the correct choice. Everything in the previous year had prompted this second, this email. What its like to work for Google

What its like to work for Google by Amber Rolfe Want to be part of one of the world’s biggest companies? You should work for Google… With a great company culture and a wide range of employee benefits, along with quirky and comfortable offices that challenge the stereotypical 9-to-5, becoming a ‘Googler’ (actually what they call themselves) could be the perfect fit for your career. But what’s it really like to work there, and how do you get your foot in the door?To help give you an idea of the application process and day-to-day, here’s what it’s like to work for Google:  The interview processGoogle are notorious for their ‘creative’ (see also: difficult) interview questions, so if you want in, you need to get the answers nailed.Although many questions will rely on your specialist expertise and practical ability, others are designed to test your character, logic skills, and ability to learn and grow. Roleplaying, practical tasks and tests may also be part of the mix.Ultimately, their goal is to find out how clued up you are on them as a company, so doing your research is vital to ensuring you fully understand Google’s products, story, and vision. And remember: an eagerness to learn is an essential attribute for any aspiring Googler â€" so claiming that you’re perfect is never a good approach.Although they’re famously coy on exactly what they ask, here are just a few of the more unusual questions you should prepare for:Do you have an IQ higher than 130?What shall we have for dinner this evening? How many times a day do the hands of a clock overlap? Are you incompetent and lazy? How many piano tuners are there in the entire world?Difficult interview questions and answersFive interview questions you should stop being scared of  The workplaceVoted the number one place to work in the UK on a number of occasions, you’d probably expect that Google’s offices are up there with some of the best â€" both in terms of company culture and aesthetics. For example, the quirkily cr afted interior design featured in the Covent Garden office is the epitome of a comfortable workspace, and is probably about the closest thing you can get to working from your own home (there is actually a ‘Home Working area’).That is, if your home is filled with a mix of cosy vintage furnishings and modern decor, a secret garden, a comfy library, and a huge garden area complete with your own allotments. And while no two offices are the same, Google always incorporate a sense of local personality, healthy living, and quirkiness into every single one of their workplaces. All in all, as offices go, this definitely beats a plain old desk… As long as you have the willpower to actually get some work done whilst sitting inside a room designed like a tiny submarine. The rolesGoogle offer a range of opportunities, which are available across their three London offices, along with their fourth office based in Manchester. Here’s a few of the fields you could work in:Engineering technology Marketing communicationsBusiness strategyLegal financeSales customer serviceDesignHR  The employee benefitsGoogle’s company perks go far beyond their uniquely designed offices. With healthy living in mind, they offer a free onsite gym service and a cycle to work programme, along with free food three times a day â€" basically enough to make you want to live at work just so you never have to do your own food shopping again. They also provide a number of benefit programmes, including generous parental and sick leave policies, pensions, and life insurance. Some offices even allow you to bring your dog to work.Employees also boasted a good sense of overall job satisfaction, especially citing the amount of available opportunities and choice involved in their preferred workload and type. And, as Google is a big believer of ‘lifelong learning’, they fully support and accommodate for their employees in both their professional and personal development.  The company cultureWith a fun wo rking environment and a range of company perks, it’s not surprising that the culture at Google is anything but dull.Priding themselves in maintaining the openness of a ‘start-up culture’, Google allow all of their employees to input their ideas regularly. And with the uniquely designed meeting spaces and communal areas featured in all of their offices, Googlers are encouraged to interact with all members of the company (both in terms of work and play). But it’s not just the environment that makes working for Google great. As with many things, it’s the people that make it.With many internal reviews stating that being surrounded by ‘smart, friendly, and passionate people’ is/was a massive pro when working there, it proves that Google’s ‘only hiring the best’ policy works in everyone’s favour.  Still searching for your perfect position? How to Prepare for Your First Language Teacher Job Interview - Algrim.co

How to Prepare for Your First Language Teacher Job Interview - Algrim.co Job interviews can be tough, it's just a simple fact of life â€" putting you through the wringer is pretty much what a job interview is all about. In your particular case, a language teacher job interview is certainly no exception to this rule. But that shouldn't discourage you one iota! Here are a few things you can do to make sure you nail that interview. Be Versatile Versatility is a tried and true signifier of not only competence but also dedication. You'll want to show your prospective employer that you possess all of these traits to leave a lasting impression on them. If you're versatile, it means that you're capable of handling anything that comes your way. This is key in the realm of teaching because you constantly have to contend with the distinct needs of your students â€" by addressing their needs, you will ensure a greater level of aptitude. Everyone's different: they learn differently and they learn for different reasons. There are many students with various specific purposes. Some of them want to learn conversational French to relocate, some are willing to pass the exams. Once, a girl came to me saying that she wants to read French poetry in its original text, that was the sole purpose of her studies. You need to be ready for that: to show your interviewer that you're not going to treat your students like they're all the same. Be Prepared to Exhibit the Qualities That'll Make You a Good Teacher You, as a teacher, carry a profound responsibility. In order to truly fulfill your responsibilities as a teacher, you must possess and exhibit very specific qualities that make you well-suited for the job. Put it this way, if I were to make a list of the ingredients that make a good teacher, it would probably look a little something like this: Compassion Confidence Knowledge Passion These are all qualities that you want to outwardly express during the course of your first language teacher job interview. School administrators are regularly on the look-out for these qualities. Working at a typical public school may be drastically different from online jobs for teachers. Nonetheless, teaching is teaching, no matter the setting. Sure, it may seem straightforward but you'll want to be rather meticulous in peppering in expressions of these traits throughout the interview. It's more than likely that these are qualities that you truly do possess (I'd hope so, anyway) â€" the trick here is to communicate that to the interviewer. Prepare yourself in advance to field any questions that may arise regarding your grasp of these qualities. That way you'll be able to answer confidently and assuredly â€" without second-guessing anything â€" which, again, is something they'll be looking for in a candidate. Show Passion Towards What You'll Be Teaching I realize that passion was included in the previous list of qualities that you should display during the course of your first interview. However, I strongly hold to it that passion ought to be afforded even more effort. The reason I stress the importance of passion is simple: you could have taught anything in the world, but you chose ______. You must ignite that passion if you want to truly be a good teacher. More importantly, you need to express that passion to even get your foot in the door. Now, some may say a teacher's role is to teach anything and everything, but we all know from experience that isn't the case. Think back to some of your favorite teachers in high school or college â€" they all taught the subjects which they felt passionately about. That's what makes a great teacher. In the case of a language teacher, passion generally lies within the culture surrounding the language. Something drew you to not only learn that language (unless it's native to you) but also share it with others. As someone contending for a language teaching job, you'll want to express to the interviewer what makes you tick about this language. Whether it be literature, music, film, or even your love of visiting a country and interacting with its people, you'll want to effectively showcase what the subject of your teaching means to YOU. Try To Plan Around Your Employer's Expectations This one may seem a little duplicitous but it is a necessary part of the interviewing process. When you are going in for an interview, you are there to pitch yourself to the employer. The most effective way to do that is to gauge what they're looking for in a teacher. There are all kinds of different employment opportunities for you â€" from online language jobs to an in-person language teacher job â€" and you need to know what is expected of you in each opening. Take time to carefully assess the job posting and strike conclusions regarding what they're looking for. What sort of institution is it? How old are the students? What level of proficiency must be maintained? The answers to these questions hold the key. Once you uncover the needs of the employer, you can quickly build a strategy around how to go about pitching yourself: your strengths, your goals, your previous experiences, why you do what you do, etc. All of this will lend a hand in emphasizing what needs to be emphasized and, ultimately, maximizing how you present yourself. Conclusion By adhering to these simple â€" yet effective â€" tenants, you will no doubt be able to land your first teaching gig without fail. At the very least, you will certainly be in a better position to understand yourself and where you want to go with your career. Like any interview, your first language teacher job interview will be somewhat of a hurdle. However, you'll be well-equipped to traverse it: knowledge of self is what's most important, you just have to know how to communicate it to the world. Contribution by Susan Craig

Ask Dana How to explain why you were fired

Ask Dana How to explain why you were fired I was fired from my prior last job. How do I answer the question, “Why did you leave your last position?” Advice from Dana: How to Explain Why You Were Fired This question demonstrates that you are preparing for an interview well in advance â€" most job search candidates don’t take the time to prepare answers for the most commonly asked interview questions. The key to answering any question that may expose something negative is to balance two important principles: No. 1: Don’t divulge too much, and dont phrase things in a negative way. No. 2: Be truthful! Don’t deny the fact that you were let go, but you don’t disclose details or share any rationale for your departure, either. Make it short and say it with confidence. Remember, layoffs happen daily â€" it’s all about how you frame it in an interview. And you have choices: “The company downsized.” “The company had a reduction in force.” “My department reorganized.” These explanations admit that you were impacted by a change but don’t share performance issues or the specific reason for your departure. That said, be sure to avoid saying things like: “I decided to leave to pursue other opportunities.” Nobody leaves a good job â€" they pursue new opportunities while employed. “My boss and I did not see eye-to-eye.” This statement should throw up red flags in the interviewer’s mind! “I was capped out and bored.” Shame on you â€" it sounds like you disengaged! In the other tough interview questions that you prepare for, strive for brevity and clarity. You’re there to show your confidence, self-awareness, preparedness, and passion for the position. Spend hours preparing well in advance of any interview â€" there are no shortcuts! My book â€" Cut the Crap, Get a Job! â€" has two chapters on interviews and includes a useful interview prep guide.
